commentIrving-based Hanson Pipe & Precast is providing precast concrete box culverts to the Central Texas Garden Ridge community to replace five deteriorating corrugated metal pipes that caused a 5-ft sinkhole to form on a roadway.
The cycle of corrosion/erosion of the metal culverts lead to portions to be eaten away. As this occurred, openings were created in the metal pipe allowing its surrounding bedding material to be washed away and ultimately became large enough to cause a structural failure of the roadway base and roadway on top of it.
The large hole over the metal culverts caused concerns about the structural capacity of the roadway over the culverts. It was closed until the culverts could be replaced.
Hanson’s San Antonio facility is manufacturing the product, which typically has a life expectancy of 25 years, with three precast concrete box culverts that are engineered and manufactured to last a lifetime.
The roadway will remain closed until construction is completed in early fall.
