Excavation efforts under way for PBS&J at its Main Plaza Redevelopment project in San Antonio.

Archaeologists from PBS&J working with the city of San Antonio on the redevelopment of Main Plaza have made several discoveries telling of the plaza’s role in the Texas Revolution.

The excavation of the entrenchment, which was prompted by the construction of new stormwater drains for the redeveloped plaza, uncovered military and domestic artifacts including the possible tip of a Mexican officer’s sword, gunflints, buttons, ceramics and animal bone.

The Main Plaza redevelopment project is intended to restore its traditional use as a pedestrian plaza. In its new configuration, the plaza will link the historic San Fernando Cathedral to the nearby San Antonio River and will limit vehicular traffic to the northern and southern margins of the plaza. The project will also increase the size of the plaza by 50% and provide a venue for public events and activities.

HCSS Makes List of Best Companies to Work in Texas

Houston-based HCSS, developer of construction field management, estimating and resource management software, was named No. 6 in the medium-sized companies category of the 2008 Best Companies to Workfor in Texas program. The rankings were published in a special section in the February 2008 issue of Texas Monthly. HCSS also made the list in 2006.

HCSS, along with companies from across the state, participated in a two-part process to determine the winners. The first part consisted of evaluating each company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking.

The survey findings reported that HCSS employees were most happy with the flexibility and authority to quickly address customer needs, relationships with their supervisor, care for co-workers, flexibility and benefits.

Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Texas with assistance from ModernThink LLC, who analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

The ranked companies were recognized at a gala awards luncheon at the Renaissance in Austin earlier this year.
