Texas' Top Projects - 12
Combat Aviation Brigade Hangars, Task Order #1 and #2
PROJECT COST: $110,949,000
The Combat Aviation Brigade Hangars project is one of many projects that have arisen from the U.S. Army’s Base Realignment and Closure program of 2005 in which the air defense center in Fort Bliss was transitioned to a heavy armor training post.
Encompassing a total aggregate building area of 550,000 sq ft, the project included the design and construction of five rotary wing aircraft hangars, each to house more than 100 Chinook, Blackhawk and Apache helicopters to enhance the functional requirements for each heavy Brigade Combat Team stationed at Fort Bliss.
Challenges included the construction of four hangars simultaneously on an existing military installation and active airfield. Crews have followed a design-build delivery method for a project that will be seeking LEED Silver certification through the U.S. Green Building Council upon completion.
