San Antonio Military Medical Center

Project Cost: $560,000,000

San Antonio Military Medical Center

The $556-million integrated design-bid-build contract for construction of the San Antonio Military Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio is a result of the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission’s recommendations. The 1.1-million-sq-ft project, including renovations to the existing Clark-built Brooke Army Medical Center, will create the military’s flagship medical facility in the southern United States. Upon completion of the project, BAMC will be re-designated as the north campus of SAMMC, or SAMMC North.

The scope of work includes constructing a 790,000-sq-ft medical tower and 275,000 sq ft of renovations to the existing BAMC.

The project will also add a 5,000-space parking garage and a 28,000-sq-ft central energy plant. It will also feature an extension of BAMC’s ISR Burn Unit. In addition, it will include approximately 78,000 sq ft of medical swing space to be used by the existing hospital departments during the renovation. Throughout the project, all medical services at BAMC are expected to be fully maintained.

The changes to BAMC will allow the facility to absorb additional medical responsibilities as part of the BRAC implementation process. The military inpatient care currently provided at Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio will be consolidated at BAMC, which is one of the largest medical centers in the entire Department of Defense.
